When the list gets too long to scroll
The expenses tab has filters now: category, who paid, a date range, an amount range. There is no description search, and that one is on purpose.
A weekend trip makes a dozen expenses. A shared flat makes hundreds. Once a group has been running for a year, finding the restaurant bill from March means scrolling, then scrolling some more, then giving up and asking in the group chat.
The expenses tab has a Filter button now. Open it and you can narrow by category, by who paid, by a date range, by a minimum or maximum amount, or by any mix of those at once.
There is no search box
You probably expected one. It is missing for a reason worth explaining.
Expense descriptions get encrypted on your device before they ever reach us. We store the ciphertext and nothing else, so there is no readable text on our side to match a search against. We could search the handful of expenses your browser happens to have loaded, but that would quietly skip anything further down the list while looking like it worked. We would rather leave it out than ship a search that misses things.
So the filters cover what the server can honestly see: category, payer, date, amount. In practice that gets you to the restaurant bill from March in about two taps.
One thing that has not changed: the CSV export still hands you the whole group, filters or not. It lives in the group menu, which you can reach from tabs where the filter is nowhere on screen, and a file that came back quietly short is a nastier surprise than one that came back long.
