Split by percent, by shares, or not evenly at all
Three ways to divide a bill: exact amounts, percentages, or shares. Here is what each one is for, with an example.
Not every cost splits evenly. The rent divides by room size. The holiday flat has one couple in the big room and one person on the sofa. At dinner, one of you only had the soup. DobiSplit could always handle an uneven split, but only if you did the arithmetic yourself and typed the exact euro amount for each person.
Now you can tell it how the cost divides and let it do the math.
Three ways to say the same thing
Every split can be authored in one of three modes:
- Exact: type each person's amount directly, the way it always worked.
- Percent: give each person a percentage, and we turn it into amounts.
- Shares: give each person a share, and the cost divides in proportion.
They are just different ways of describing the same division. Whichever you pick, the result is the same: an amount per person that adds up to the total.
Splitting evenly is a button, available in every mode, not a fourth thing to hunt for. Press it and everyone gets an equal share.
When to reach for each
Exact is for the times you already know the numbers. Three people buy concert tickets in different price tiers, so each owes a different amount. Type what each person owes and move on.
Percent is for splits you agreed on in words. Two of you share a holiday flat and settled on 60/40 for the bigger room. Enter 60 and 40, and a 900 € booking becomes 540 € and 360 € without you touching a calculator.
Shares is for splitting by a quantity you can measure. Three of you share a flat and split the rent by room size: bedrooms of 20 m², 16 m², and 14 m². Enter those numbers as shares and a 750 € rent lands at 300 €, 240 €, and 210 €. You never work out that the 20 m² room is 40 % of the flat; you type the square meters and let the split follow.
